About Dr. Alonso

Dr. Javier Alonso is a board-certified dermatologist renowned both locally and internationally for his extensive knowledge and training in the field. A native of Spain, he pursued his initial medical studies in Europe and expanded his expertise via study here in the United States. His extensive dermatology training with global leaders in the field have made him a true leader in the practice of Dermatology.
Dr. Alonso’s medical studies began at the University of Salamanca in Spain, and he obtained his medical degree from Navarra Medical School. He moved to Madrid in 1990, where he trained and practiced Dermatology for 10 years. He then studied at the world renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota specializing in immunopathology of the skin. With more than 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Alonso is a recognized voice on complex dermatological topics such as immunobullous diseases, connective tissue disorders, psoriasis, and cutaneous lymphomas among others.
In 2006, Dr. Alonso and his family moved to Miami, Florida to become a member of the faculty at the University of Miami Medical School – Department of Dermatology. He has also been active in teaching dermatology residents at the Miami VA Hospital, a position which he continues today. He joined IDR in 2011 as a dermatologist and Primary Investigator for their clinical trials program and recently founded Driven Research LLC to continue conducting clinical trials in the field.
Dr. Alonso’s latest endeavor has brought him on staff at both Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute with Dr. Jill Waibel, as well as joining Integrated Dermatology of Coral Gables in 2016. In 2019, Dr. Alonso started his own dermatology practice named Coral Gables Dermatology & Aesthetics. Dr. Alonso’s primary passion has been and continues to be – Providing Excellent Patient Care. He brings a wealth of experience as well as a genuine passion for medical excellence to his patients.
Dr. Alonso provides patients both cosmetic and medical dermatology care, along with laser procedures and complex surgical procedures including Mohs technique, used to remove skin cancer in important cosmetic areas of the body.
